This one is Tough for Me
Michelle Kosilek, who was also known as Robert Kosilek, killed his wife and was sentenced to life in prison in 1990. It was determined that Robert could live as a woman, which is what he wants claiming it has been the root to his problems, and because if the correctional institute did not allow this, it would be in violation of the Eighth Amendment which protects against cruel and unusual punishment. Now Michelle wants a sex change operation. So far it has cost the tax payers $52,000 to hear this case and it can cost another $20,000 for the operation (source).
Now, I’m not going to judge whether Robert really wants to be a woman or not. I just thank my lucky stars that I have never had to deal with the issue, it must be horrible to be trapped in a body you don’t think you should have. However, what I’m having trouble with is why in the world do we have to pay for his court cases and his operation. Why can’t the judge say to Michelle, “okay have your sex change, take your hormones, do what you need to, but you pay for it.” I’ll bet you anything, Michelle, or Robert, finds a way to pay for the operation!
One question, what kind of prison is Michelle in, male housing or female?
